Best time to see flamingos in Nakuru

Flamingos in Nakuru are the most popular attraction in Lake Nakuru National Park. Actually, the first thing that catches your attention are the troops of pink flamingos that are always on the park.

Flamingos are beautiful birds and you can be sure to find both greater and lesser flamingos in Nakuru. You will come across the breathtakingly gorgeous pink flamingos lounging on the banks of Lake Nakuru whenever you visit the park, as these birds spend their entire day, month, and year on the lake.

Lake Nakuru is a Saline Water Lake, Meaning it has a High salt concentration Level. It is approximately 164 km from Nairobi City, Capital of Kenya,1754 Meters above Sea Level and Lies South of Nakuru County. The very salty nature of Lake Nakuru supports an abundance of algae, which is a primary food source for the flamingos in Nakuru, so it draws out the huge flocks, along with pelicans who are known to nest near the banks.

Flamingo Reproduction

Flamingos are among the most romantic social birds living in colonies although females can change their mates as they are in large numbers. Males choose their breeding mates depending on the brightness of their feathers colors.

Flamingo Feeding & Incubation

Flamingos are known to mate during the rainy season. During these seasons, there is enough food to feed their chicks which are usually in large numbers. Like other birds, flamingos have internal fertilization and the eggs hatch after 30 days. During this period, both male and female take part in incubation and feeding.

In conclusion, flamingos in Nakuru are seen all throughout the year, but in large numbers during the rainy and after rainy seasons as there is increase in alkaline levels in the lake which causes increase in blue – green algae.

The Lesser Flamingos

Also referred to as phoeniconaias Minor is the smallest but the numerous one in Kenya. They have a Pink color and live on lake shores of Lake Bogoria in Nakuru National park
