3. Samburu Safari

Samburu is a name of Masai origin ‘Samburr’ being a traditional leather
bag for carrying honey and milk. The region is characterized by vast,
open landscapes, dried riverbeds (depending on the season of the year)
and red volcanic soil. Rock outcroppings contrast against the dense
woodland vegetation along the banks of Ewaso Nyiro meaning ‘River of
brown water’, the river that gives life to the reserve.
The area is home to the famous Samburu people who are closely
related to the Masai in the South. Both have retained their old cultural
tradition and have defied passage of time and civilization.

Samburu is renowned for its rare species of fauna known as the
‘Samburu five’. These five particular animals are usually only found
north of the equator – the long-necked gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe
which is characterized by its liver-colored geometric patches defined by
narrow white lines, the Grevy zebra which is bigger than the common
zebra and looks more like a horse, the Beisa oryx with black horizontal
stripe running across its lower flank and the Somali ostrich males which

Flamingo Reproduction

Flamingos are among the most romantic social birds living in colonies although females can change their mates as they are in large numbers. Males choose their breeding mates depending on the brightness of their feathers colors.

Flamingo Feeding & Incubation

Flamingos are known to mate during the rainy season. During these seasons, there is enough food to feed their chicks which are usually in large numbers. Like other birds, flamingos have internal fertilization and the eggs hatch after 30 days. During this period, both male and female take part in incubation and feeding.

In conclusion, flamingos are seen all throughout the year, but in large numbers during the rainy and after rainy seasons as there is increase in alkaline levels in the lake which causes increase in blue – green algae.

The Lesser Flamingos

Also referred to as phoeniconaias Minor is the smallest but the numerous one in Kenya. They have a Pink color and live on lake shores of Lake Bogoria in Nakuru National park

The Pink flamingos feed on microscopic plants in Mud and cool water. They do not feed on rough water.
