Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi/Sirimon/Judmaier Camp (Old Moses Camp)

Leave Nairobi at 7.30am to Nanyuki town for lunch, taking about 4 hours. Proceed to Sirimon Gate, 1 hr, 2440m. From the gate follow the track as it winds uphill though the forest which becomes heath land after about 3 hrs. About 3½ hours from the gate the track veers right to Judmaier Camp, 3300m for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Judmier Camp/Shipton Camp

After breakfast, follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses Ontullii River. Go right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Liki North and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. Dinner and overnight at Shipton Camp, 4200m.

Day 3: Shiptons/Point Lenana/Mintos/Lake Ellis

Leave at 3am up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing visible part towards lower Hall Tarns arriving Mount Kenya point Lenana (6km from Shipton Camp) at 6:30am, taking about 3hrs. After the sunrise, descend down to Mintos hut (6km), 2hrs, for breakfast and 12km, 3-4hrs further down to lake Ellis Camp, 3,400m, for dinner and overnight at the Camp.

Day 4: Lake Ellis - Nairobi

Descend 2hr, 9km to Chogoria gate to catch your transfer vehicle back to Nairobi.

Climate on Mount Kenya

  • Highly Variable: Weather changes rapidly. Be prepared for sun, rain, wind, and cold on the same day.

  • Altitude Effect: Temperature decreases significantly as you ascend. It can be below freezing at night at high camps.

  • Best Trekking Seasons: January-February and July-October are the driest and clearest months.

Visas

  • An eVisa is required for most international travelers and must be obtained online prior to travel.
  • Always check the latest requirements through the Electronic Travel Authorisation

Health

  • Vaccinations: Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus.
  • Malaria: Not a risk on Mount Kenya due to the high altitude. Prophylaxis is not needed for this trek but may be required if visiting other parks.
  • Altitude Sickness (AMS): This is the primary health concern. The itinerary is designed to aid acclimatization, but awareness of symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness) is crucial.

Currency

  • KES (Kenyan Shilling): US Dollars are also widely accepted.
  • ATMs: Available in Nairobi and major towns. Withdraw cash before the trek for tips and souvenirs.
  • Credit Cards: Not accepted on the mountain. Cash is essential.

Packing List

  • Essential Gear: Waterproof hiking boots, sleeping bag (rated -10°C), head torch, rain gear, warm layers (fleece, thermal underwear), gloves, daypack.
  • Highly Recommended: Hiking poles, water purification tablets, high-energy snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, and a refillable water bottle.

Gratuities

Tipping is customary and a significant part of the crew’s income. We recommend:

  • Head Guide: $20-25 per day from the group

  • Assistant Guide: $15-20 per day from the group

  • Cook: $15-20 per day from the group

  • Porter: $10-15 per porter per day from the group

Tips are usually given collectively at the end of the trek in cash (KES or USD).

Travel Insurance

  • Mandatory. Your policy must include emergency medical evacuation and specifically cover high-altitude trekking up to 5,000 meters. It should also cover trip cancellation and loss of gear.

On the Trek

  • Water: Treated water for drinking will be provided. You must bring your own bottles or hydration bladder to fill.
  • Safety: Your guide’s decision is final on all matters of safety and fitness to continue the ascent.
  • Pacing: Walk slowly (“pole pole”) to aid acclimatization and conserve energy.
  • Environmental Care: This is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All waste must be carried out.
